What Happens at a Dental Checkup? Here’s What to Expect

If it’s been a while since your last dental checkup, or if you’ve never quite known what happens behind that door, you’re not alone. A lot of people feel a little uncertain walking in, especially if the appointment feels more like a mystery than a routine errand. So let’s just talk through it, from start to finish.

It starts before anyone touches your teeth

At your first visit (or if it’s been a few years), we’ll take some time to catch up on your health history: any medications you’re taking, changes in your overall health, concerns you’ve been meaning to mention. This part matters more than people realize. Things like blood pressure medications, diabetes, and acid reflux all affect your oral health in ways that shape how we approach your care.

X-rays: not every time, but often

Depending on when you last had them and what’s going on, we may take a set of X-rays. These let us see what’s happening between teeth and below the gumline, areas we simply can’t check visually. We keep radiation exposure minimal and only recommend X-rays when they actually add something useful.

The cleaning

This is usually the part people think of first. One of our hygienists will remove any built-up plaque and tartar (that hard, calcified buildup that regular brushing can’t touch). Then comes the polish, which cleans the surface of your teeth and leaves that smooth, clean feeling you probably remember from being a kid.

At Dentistry on 43, we use GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) technology for our cleanings. It’s a newer approach that’s gentler and more thorough, using a fine powder spray to remove bacteria and staining before we do any scaling. Patients consistently tell us it’s a more comfortable experience than what they’ve had elsewhere.

The exam

Our dentist will then do a full examination: checking for cavities, assessing your gum health, looking at your bite, and screening for any signs of oral cancer. We also check existing fillings, crowns, or other restorations to make sure everything is still doing its job.

If anything needs attention, we’ll talk through it clearly — what it is, why it matters, what your options are, and what happens if we leave it. No pressure, no jargon, no surprising you with a treatment plan that came out of nowhere.

How often should you come in?

Most people do well with two checkups a year. Some folks, depending on gum health, cavity history, or other factors benefit from coming in a little more often. We’ll make a recommendation based on your specific situation, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

What if it has been a long time?

We hear this a lot, and we want to be clear: there’s no judgment here. Life gets busy, dental anxiety is real, life can be expensive, and sometimes years just pass. The most important thing is getting back on track, and we’re genuinely good at making that feel manageable.

Whether your last dental checkup was six months ago or six years ago, you’re welcome here.
