Fluoride gets talked about a lot, and not always accurately. So here’s the honest version: fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps it repair itself after the daily wear and tear of eating and drinking. Health Canada and the Canadian Dental Association both support its use in preventing tooth decay, and decades of research back that up.
Think of it as a little extra armour for your teeth. It won’t fix a cavity that’s already formed, but it’s one of the simplest ways to stop new ones from starting.
Why this matters more out here
In bigger cities, many people get a steady dose of fluoride from treated municipal water without ever thinking about it. In the Peace Country, that’s often not the case. Plenty of families around Beaverlodge and the surrounding area are on well water, cisterns, or bottled water, and those sources typically don’t contain added fluoride.
That doesn’t mean your teeth are doomed. It just means fluoride toothpaste and the occasional in-office treatment do a bit more heavy lifting for your family than they might elsewhere.
What a fluoride treatment is actually like
It’s honestly one of the easiest things we do. During your regular exam and cleaning, we apply a fluoride varnish or gel to your teeth. It takes a few minutes, it doesn’t hurt, and then you’re on your way. Most people benefit from a treatment once or twice a year, and we’ll let you know what makes sense for you rather than pushing anything you don’t need.
Fluoride treatments are especially helpful if you have receding gums, wear aligners or braces, take medications that cause dry mouth, or have kids whose adult teeth are still coming in.
Frequently asked questions
Is fluoride safe for kids?
Yes, in the right amounts. We use age-appropriate doses, and for little ones we’ll show you how much toothpaste to use at home (a rice-grain smear for toddlers, a pea-sized amount once they can spit). If you’re ever unsure, bring your child in for a Happy Visit and we’ll walk you through it, no pressure and no lecture.
Do adults need fluoride too?
Often, yes. Enamel doesn’t grow back, and things like gum recession and dry mouth become more common with age. A quick treatment at your checkup is cheap insurance.
How do I know if my water has fluoride?
If you’re on a well or cistern, assume it doesn’t. If you’re on a municipal supply, your water utility can tell you. Either way, mention your water source at your next visit and we’ll factor it into your prevention plan.
